The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco recently hosted a Filipino Martial Arts workshop as part of its Violence Against Women Campaign, connecting cultural heritage with community empowerment. Legacy Filipino Martial Arts was chosen to lead the workshops, with instruction provided by Joseph Bautista and Ben Villao of Legacy FMA.
A Historic Institution

The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco has served the Filipino community on the West Coast since December 2, 1946, opening just months after the Philippines established formal diplomatic relations with the United States. Dr. Roberto Regala served as the mission’s first consul.
After nearly 80 years of service, including earlier locations at the Ferry Building and the Presidio, the Consulate established its permanent home at the Philippine Center on 447 Sutter Street in Union Square in 1974. Today, it serves Northern and Central California, Northern Nevada, and eight other western states.
Filipino Martial Arts for Empowerment

Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), also known as Kali, Eskrima, and Arnis, is a centuries-old tradition rooted in Philippine cultural heritage. Beyond physical self-defense techniques, FMA emphasizes awareness, timing, spatial management, and strategic thinking.
Self-defense training programs have shown multiple benefits for participants, including increased confidence, body awareness, and assertiveness. For communities where cultural factors may discourage self-advocacy, particularly among women, FMA offers a culturally relevant framework for empowerment while honoring traditional practices.
The Violence Against Women Campaign

The Violence Against Women Campaign at the San Francisco Consulate addresses a significant public health and human rights concern through education, advocacy, and practical intervention programs. The workshop complements other campaign elements including legal assistance information, counseling resources, and community education.
By hosting self-defense programming in a diplomatic space with deep historical significance, the Consulate aims to normalize conversations around violence prevention and survivor support while expanding its role as a comprehensive community resource.
